   Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5980

The Ref. 5980 chronograph shares the same movement with the Ref. 5960 released earlier in 2006 with a similar dial layout, but minus the calendar and power reserve indication of the 5960. The hour and minute registers share the same dial space at 6 o'clock with the minute register hand making one revolution every 30 minutes, and the hour register recording up to 12 hours.

Available only in steel with steel bracelet at the moment, I hope this will change to include a strap model in the future.

Both the 5980 and 5960 employ a totally new in-house Patek chronograph movement that uses a vertical clutch mechanism to engage and disengage the chronograph functions. There are several advantages to a vertical clutch as compared to the horizontal clutch mechanisms of yesteryear. First and foremost, they engage and disengage instantly with jumping of the seconds hand either plus or minus of the actual recorded time.
To learn more about this particular movement, please see Ron DeCorte's previous in-depth review of the Patek Philippe Ref 5960, which uses the same movement here.

Secondly, the vertical clutch requires less space within the watch movement allowing more space for other mechanical complications.
