For a taste of what it’s like to be treated like Indian royalty, check in at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower. Built at the turn of the 20th century, this majestic hotel has already played host to numerous maharajas, princes, kings, presidents, CEOs and entertainers. Overlooking the Arabian Sea and India’s historic monument, the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower boasts probably the best view of any hotel in Mumbai.

The magic of India’s old world charm begins the moment you step into the hotel’s lobby. From the vaulted alabaster ceilings and onyx columns to the individually themed high-ceilinged suites adorned with impressive paintings and artefacts, one is overwhelmed by the imperial grandeur and opulence of the Taj. It is difficult to imagine this hotel once served as a hospital during World War I. To get the best out of your palatial experience, opt for one of the Grand Luxury Suites in the Palace Wing.

Once considered the crowning glory of India’s luxury hotel chains, the Taj has had to face stiff competition from the relatively more contemporary Oberoi and InterContinental in recent years. Notably, dining and hotel services have drawn mixed reviews from guests who have stayed at the Taj. However, with the hotel’s illustrious history, there is no better place in Mumbai to behold the magnificence of old world India.
