Whenever you find yourself sitting in a plane, at the end of the runway, awaiting takeoff, do you feel nervous, with the unmistakable twitter of butterflies flapping around inside your stomach?

Then this story is not for you.

Instead, adrenaline junkies - from mild to wild - should take note, as we take you through some of the biggest airborne thrills available out there today. World affairs and resultant security issues have created problems for many people in the quest of their very own pilot's licenses. Time, too, is a definite constraint, with many flying schools requiring large numbers of hours of instruction, which is time that many of us simply cannot afford.

The good news is, however, that not having a pilot's license should not deter you from seeking out the joy of flight. There are quite a number of civilian flight services out there - especially in Australia and New Zealand, where recreational flight still thrives - with different kinds of joyflights catering to a varied market of flight enthusiasts from quiet, scenic cruises, to taking the controls of fighter jets, to being shot into the atmosphere to the edge of space.
