Bonta, Singapore

This chic Italian restaurant at the heart of Mohammed Sultan would have been a quaint existence alongside the string of pubs and throngs of party animals in this part of town. These days, however, restaurants and plush lounges are the only thriving establishments in what used to be the epicenter of Singapore's pubbing scenes. From a distance, one can easily spot the flicker of tea lights at Bontá's dimly lit alfresco dining area. The cosy ambience sets the stage for amore e passione. Inside, the décor is decidedly minimalist – with the bright orange fabric paneled wall feature being the only showpiece of flamboyance. The restaurant's mezzanine floor houses a private dining room decked in lavender-gray hues and black fabric crystal chandeliers, and a well-stocked wine cellar, with more than 200 labels mostly from Italy.

At the helm of Bontá is chef-partner Luca Pezzera. The affable 38-year-old, who takes time to mingle with diners, hails from Bergamo, Italy. His passion for cooking shows in his pursuit of excellence in his dishes, which he sees as works of art.
