The Flare brings to mind the iconic Esplanade, one of
Singapore's most recognizable architectural landmarks, especially its
triangular shaped metal plates. However, what gives it a one up over the Esplanade is
that the metal plates can be tilted individually by computer-controlled
pneumatic cylinders to reflect sunlight. When tilted downwards, the metal plates are shaded from the sun and thus appear as dark pixels.
This means the plates can be programmed to create an
infinite number of different combinations of waves and patterns. The resulting visual effect is that of an
animated flowing façade that the Berlin-based design studio WHITEvoid says, "acts like a living skin and allows a building to express, communicate and
interact with its environment". Check out the video below to fully appreciate
the beauty of The Flare.
