Last November, we introduced to you White Desert, a
specialist travel company that provides adventure seekers a chance to scale
Earth’s final frontier – Antarctica. Founded by polar explorer Patrick
Woodhead, White Desert is now into its second season of operations.
Set atop a 150 feet cliff, with spectacular views of the
surreal icescapes and the Antarctic Ocean, White Desert’s campsite, called Whichaway,
sounds like a name from Hogwarts. Think luxury safari tents on ice, replete
with gourmet delights by an award-winning chef.
And to make the Antarctic experience more exciting, Patrick
and his team of polar experts supported two world record attempts by two of
their clients – Ram Barkai and Eric Burhans.
In February this year, Barkai, who hails from South Africa,
completed a grueling 1-km swim through 1°C
water to record the most southerly swim. Burhans, on the other hand, ‘sailed’
across the white expanse of Antarctica in a hot-air balloon to register the first
solo free flight in the frozen continent in December 2007.
While setting world records may not be every thrill-seeker’s
career ambition, or everyone’s cup of tea for that matter, White Desert has
carefully tailored its itineraries to suit every individual.
For adrenaline addicts, White Desert takes you to scale ice
peaks, go ice-climbing and skiing in mountain ranges, or kite-ski across
the frozen wilderness.
For nature lovers, visit the continent’s native inhabitants
– Emperor Penguin colony at Neumeyer with a population of over 6,000, or enjoy
leisure trails along the breathtaking coastline.
Trips run from November to December, priced between 28,000
and 32,000 euros, depending on your choice of activities. However, do note that
White Desert takes only a maximum of 10 clients on each trip.
