At the recently concluded Salone Internazionale del Mobile
(or Milan Furniture Fair) this year, which ran from 16-21 April, one exhibit
literally ‘stole’ the limelight. It’s the eco-friendly Project OR, a gigantic
vortex-shaped photovoltaic chandelier that stands in the courtyard in the
center of Milano.
Developed as a group project by Ran
Ankori, Francesco Brenta, Maya Carni, Chrisoph Klemmt, Laura Micalizzi and Elisa Oddone, the OR
chandelier essentially captures sunlight and stores it as electricity to light
up its LED-embedded surface at night.
What is truly fascinating is that the OR chandelier also
emits a kaleidoscope of colors in the day as ultra-violet light from the sun
reacts with the polygonal segments to produce different colored hues. Besides
serving as an outdoor lighting fixture, it can tell you when it’s about to
rain. Just follow the light.
