In a move that some may find amusing and others obtrusive,
the French will slap on a gigantic webbed carbon Kevlar observation deck that
doubles the size of the Eiffel Tower’s current deck.
True to the French’s artistic pride, the design is nothing
short of creative genius, courtesy of SERERO Architects. The French studio’s
proposal got the nod from the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, who
wanted to restructure the public reception and access areas of the tower for
its 120th birthday celebration.
SERERO’s proposed platform would more than double the floor space of the
tower’s observation deck, which would hopefully translate to shorter visitor
queues, and a greater experience of Paris at 1,063 feet (or 325 m).
Whilst some critics have derided this project as defacing
Paris’ most cherished member of the city’s skyline, many others have embraced
it as a welcome answer to the call of a bigger deck. But design purists need
not worry, since the bolted-on structure is only temporary, and can be easily
removed later.
Built between 1887 and 1889, the Eiffel Tower was initially
conceived as a temporary fixture when it was made as an entrance arch to the
World Fair that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French
Revolution.
Since then, the Eiffel Tower has become France’s global
icon, and perhaps one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Only time will tell if this webbed Kevlar deck becomes a
permanent Parisian resident as well.
