Rinspeed
presents the sQuba, the world’s first real submersible car, at this
year’s International
Geneva Motor Show.
Powered
by three electric motors all
located in the rear, this truly all-weather, all-environment and
all-terrain little roadster is able to move with style on the road,
and fly underwater with relative ease. Of these three motors, one
provides propulsion on land, while the other two drive the screws for
underwater motoring.
This car is no sluggish beast underwater; as the
twin Seabob jet drives located at the front ensure that one would not
look out of place and plodding along underwater. An integrated tank
of compressed air supplies air for the driver and passenger and the
roof is kept open for safety purposes, in cases of an emergency exit.
The
sQuba surfaces itself when there are no occupants, and is further
equipped with the ability for autonomous driving on land, thanks to a
sophisticated laser sensor system from the Hamburg company Ibeo.
This can be done without human intervention in its operations.
Completing
this, is a VDO instrument cluster and controls that are equally
effective at systems management of this vehicle and maintaining a
futuristic ambiance while submerged.
Rechargeable
lithium-ion batteries keep the Swiss-made sQuba always ready for your
fantasy ride beneath the waves, bringing to life a screen fantasy
from the espionage world of James Bond. The martini, regrettably,
would have to remain on dry land.
