Famous for dressing up luxury sports cars, with such illustrious names as Aston Martin,
Maserati, Ferrari, Spyker and the most recently, Diatto, Italian carrozzeria
Zagato has turned its attention to watches. Zagato president Andrea Zagato (pictured above, left) has
teamed up with childhood friend Marcello Binda, President of Swiss watchmaker Wyler
Genève's parent company, the Binda Group, to manufacture its first luxury
timepiece.
Not surprisingly, the titanium-clad Wyler-Zagato watch is dressed
with design features that point to the Italian atelier's proud coachbuilding
roots. The watch dial is "divided" into two zones by Zagato's distinctive "double bubble" shape, which can be seen on the roof lines of many of the
company’s creations. The company's trademark "Z" logo in red replaces the hour
marker at 9 o’clock.
And the automotive features do not stop there – there's
the power reserve indicator designed to look like a car's fuel
gauge, complete with "E" (empty) and "F" (full) markings, the red-tipped
seconds hands, and Wyler Genève rubber bracelet with signature tyre-tread
pattern.
Like a car's suspension, the in-house built movement is housed in a
titanium container that is cushioned between bezel and case back in a
carbon-fiber resin frame mounted on four sprung titanium screws. This
arrangement gives the movement shock protection. The Wyler-Zagato watch will be
made in a limited edition of 25, and comes in a special black presentation box
that looks like a car tool kit with the Zagato insignia.
