The Hara Chair
Established in London in 2004, luxury design company Based Upon was started by brothers Ian
and Richard Abell after they discovered a liquefied metal called Aloxolotl. It can be sprayed onto any surface and create
different aesthetic effects, even speeding up the process of rusting for
certain materials.

Marco Pierre White's Luciano: painting in semi-precious resins and metals
With Aloxolotl and other materials like semi-precious resins and
coloured lacquers in hand, Based Upon's diverse
stable of artists often experiments with layered textures for their designs.
The result is organic patterns that resemble chasms in rock, or water ripples
on wall spaces that evoke a colossal feel.

Every project undertaken by Based Upon is one-of-a-kind, as seen in
landmark projects like Nobu Berkeley, the
Mayfair, Marco Pierre White's Luciano, Donna Karan Conduit Street, Fortnum and
Mason, Langham Artesian Bar, and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital
Road in London.

Nobu Berkeley: wall of burnt
oak with white gold-filled cracks
Together with famous British designer David Collins, Based Upon created a visual spectacle where a feature wall of burnt
oak has cracks filled with white gold for the Nobu Berkeley project. This wall
can be seen as a reflection of Ian Abell's design philosophy, for he likes "finding beauty in decay". Based Upon also engages in projects for
private residences where you can request for unique interiors ranging from
furnishings to art pieces.
